The other day I talked about how I got the power tools that I use in my business to make frames for my oil paintings (if you missed it you can see it
here). Today I want to share with you why I'm glad I never threw away my old "technology".
As you know I'm wrapping up work on my "superbike" commission and part of that is putting a frame on it. I got a nice frame for a good price that is the right shape for the painting only larger. To make the frame the right size it needs to be cut down so it would be really easy to just grab the miter saw. The problem was getting a space set up for it and waiting for a good time of the day to use a power tool outside. I broke the frame apart at two opposite sides and noticed that the wood was soft. Remembering that I still had my good old back saw and miter box, I grabbed a piece of the frame and tested it on the end to see how it cut. To my surprise it cut great! I thought the old saw might chew it up too much to make it worthwhile but it went through nice. I did all four cuts in minutes without having to set up the power saw!
I think at the time I got my power tools I was thinking about a situation were they might go "down" for some reason during an important deadline, and that I would have the miter box as a "backup", I'm glad I did!
I used my normal metal brackets with two screws to a side to hold the frame together again leaving me with just filling, sanding and painting it to match the painting to go.
Do you like to go back to a time where you did things a different way? Leave me a comment and let me know, I'll see you again on Friday evening.
