Today to close out this first week of summer weather (at least in my area), I thought I would talk about a question artists get from time to time, "what is that?"
This is a question most commonly coming from a viewer pointing to a certain area on a painting. Nine times out of ten there is nothing wrong or ignorant about it, they are just naturally curious. The one time out of ten is handled a different way, and I'll save that for another post. So how do you handle this question from a serious viewer?
You can tell them what you feel it is and they might respond with a "oh" or something similar. Sometimes you can even trow it back at them and ask the viewer what they think it is and their answer may surprise you but might allow you to see your art in a new way as well.
Here is where the problem comes in to play. What if the viewer after the above scenario takes place, tells you that they love the painting and would buy it except for one thing, they ask you to change the area they don't like.
I know that some artists would do everything in their power to get that person away from their artwork as fast as possible with or without bodily harm and others who maybe might think about it. I myself am in the once it's signed, it's done camp. The only thing that would get me to think about doing it would have to come from one of my top collectors but even they understand that the artist wanted it that way for their own "taste" and you "color" that maybe by asking for such.
What do you think or feel about it? Leave me a post and let me know, take care and enjoy the weekend!
