ARE ARTIST STEREOTYPES DEAD ?
by PAT QUINN on 6/4/2008 10:22:31 PM

Today I thought I would ask a question, are artist stereotypes dead? When you decide to get serious with your art you always are on the lookout for good advice on how to go about it. One of the sources that you end up going to are other artists as well as "art world" professionals.

One of the first things that you are taught are the negative stereo-types that the general public has had toward artists for centuries. They are the following, artists are mentally ill, artists are "flighty", artists are not good business people, and the final one, art is just a scam and not a real product and they deserve to starve. The wording you may have heard if you are an artist may be different but these are them in a nutshell. Now the good news, I don't see them anywhere! I'm sure there still are a few people here and there that might still believe these "truths" about artists, but I don't see them myself. I heard a few months back that a good bit of top businesses in this country now have on their payroll artists as we have different insights to offer that their own people don't learn in "marketing school" for lack of a better term.

Whenever I'm talking to someone and I tell them I'm an artist their body language and response is always positive. I think a lot of it has to do with the "crafts explosion" we see now on the weekends. It seems that every community has an arts and crafts show of some sort on a regular basis. I think this opened peoples eyes to realizing how beautiful creativity is, and that they can come up with something art or craft related that is natural to them and find a market for it as well. If you get my newsletter (and I hope you do!), I just talked about how a Francis Bacon painting just went for $86 million dollars at auction! It looks like people who love art will pay for it still! That's all for now, what do you think? do you still run into art related stereo-types? leave a comment and let me know. Take care and I'll see you again on Friday night.
