Today I thought I would share with you one of the biggest art events in my area, The Three Rivers Arts Festival which gets under way this weekend. The event lasts for two weeks and takes up parts of downtown Pittsburgh and Point State Park.
For those not familiar with the Pittsburgh area, if you have ever seen a nationally televised sporting event here on T.V., it is the triangle area in the front of the buildings with the water fountain and the grassy area in between. This is where they set up the free music which really makes this a great time.
I hate to say it, but I think the best art is in the artist's booths and not the juried show itself. If you ever wanted to see how some people react to artwork, the juried show is for you. I remember one year seeing an artwork that I'll never forget. It was a white canvas around maybe 20"x36", and it consisted of just 3 strokes of paint, one yellow, one blue, and one red, about five inches each in length. The artist called the piece "Three Musketeers" and wanted $600.00 for it!
Again most people will tell you that the "good stuff" is in the booths that artists from around the country set up just outside the park. Some artists choose to rent for one week only, so it is wise to go both weeks so you don't miss anything.
There is one thing however that you will never miss at the Three Rivers Festival, rain! Yes this is just one of those things in life where it has become part of the "tradition" over the years so you know that "pop-up" summer storms can and will happen. Some years are better than others but what can you do? Anyway as a final note the food is great as there are vendors of all types of ethnic food as well as good old hot dogs and hamburgers. If you live in the area and haven't ever gone to see it, try it this year and I think you will like it.
What is your favorite art show that you attend each year? What makes it great? Leave me a comment and let me know. That's it for now, I'll see you again on Wednesday evening, take care!
