Today I want to raise a question, is any graffiti art? I don't know if this story made national news or not, but here in Pittsburgh our number one graffiti artist "Mook" in believe, has been arrested. They plain on charging him with over $300,000.00 in restitution, fines, and possibly going to jail for the rest of his life.
The majority of his "work" I would have to say is vandalism. Walking around with a can of spray paint and spraying some little "ditty" on someones home is uncalled for.Now having said that, what if we have a building that has been demolished and we are left with the big ugly brick wall in the neighboring building left exposed. Lets say a few days go by and one morning we wake up and discover that someone has NEATLY used several cans of spray paint and covered it with beautiful colorful shapes and lines and that no profanity is on it nor other offensive imagery, is this art? Has anything been damaged? Is it more of an eyesore than the bare wall was?
These are the questions I've always wondered about in these situations. I remember as a boy in my local park there was a white supply building that someone covered up on one side again NEATLY with "graffiti" and they put it on the front page of the local newspaper. The police wanted to know who did it because they liked it! They wanted to steer this person into the right direction to pursue their artistic talents. I don't know if that ever happened, but I do know that it was painted over white again before too long.
Thats all for now, what do you think about graffiti? Is it art under any situation? Leave me a comment and let me know. Take care and have a great weekend!
