Today I thought I would share with you the story on how I acquired my power wood working equipment.
You know if you have followed my blog long enough, my early days of framing my paintings so I won't go over that again in detail other then saying that I had a picture frame "chop shop" where I would get a larger frame at a thrift store and chop it down to the size of my painting using a miter box and back saw. I was able to get the job done but found it hard on my arms and hands when doing more then one and/or working with a frame made of hard wood. I knew then that power tools were the way to go but didn't want to just buy them at the time because again, what I had was getting the job done.
One day about two weeks before Christmas my employer called me into the office. He said that to reward me for doing a great job I could have a gift certificate at any store I wanted. I thought about it and chose Home Depot. I got some supplys, some things for my apartment, and a power miter saw. Now the four to eight cuts needed to do a frame were done in five minutes instead of twenty or more.
One year passed and it was Christmas time again and I was called into the office once more. I told him this time that I wanted to go with Sears. I got a router, a router table, and three bits. This is where I reached the point where I could now buy my own pine wood strips and make my own frames from "scratch". This comes in huge for a large painting as putting a frame on one of these is well over a hundred dollars. Regardless if the painting is a standard size or not, I just make a frame to fit it, no problem. It's not often that your employer helps you to build your own business on the side but all I can ever say is thanks! I have moved on to a different company since then but will never forget those two beautiful years where the power tools just took care of themselves.
