HAVING ENOUGH SPACE
by PAT QUINN on 5/21/2008 8:53:21 PM

Today I thought I would share my thoughts on having enough space as an artist to get your artwork done in.

I myself live in a one bedroom apartment so guess what the bedroom is used for? yes, the studio, and it was planned that way from the day I moved in. If you are wondering where I sleep, I have a sleeper sofa in the living area. This small room 10' x 11', has been able to meet all my needs from day one. I have my computer and printer, my easel of course, the "art library" I talked about on Monday, and all of my supples. On my one wall I have paintings in progress so when I can't work any further on one, I can switch to another one if I choose.

The most important thing that I found to be true was to have as much of your studio furniture and tables on wheels as you can. This way if you work on something large you can just slide stuff out of the way and not miss a beat. This comes in handy when I go to frame my oil paintings as I can comfortably work in the center of the room on the floor and be fine. I also do this to stretch and prime canvas.

As far as my lighting setup, I came up with something simple that you can get at any Home Depot or hardware store. I made a post last year on my lighting setup and you can see that here.

I can't stress enough the importance of having an area set-up, ready to go. This will free you once and for all of using the "by the time I get everything set-up ....." excuse. So the main thing in my opinion would be to have a space dedicated to your artwork, have as much of that on wheels as you can, and of course you have to see what you're doing. Do you have any creative ways of making an area of your home work great for your art? Leave a comment and let me know. That's it for today, I'll see you on Friday, and as always, take care.
