Today I thought I'd share with you something that is near to my heart, my "art library". Yes, over the years as an artist the books you buy add up and before you know it, you have your own library!
As many of you know, I took oil painting lessons as a young man and anything else that I learned about art either came from a reference book, or from the internet. I have books on painting certain subject matter and others on certain techniques.
One of my favorites is "Brushwork Essentials" by Mark Christopher Weber which covers just about anything you could think of when it comes to using brushes on your oil paintings. Another good one is "The Oil Painting Course You've Always Wanted" by Kathleen Lochen Staiger. This one answered some questions that I had for a long time such as how to efficiently paint complex shapes, and how to handle some shadow situations. If I where to pick a number three favorite, it would have to be Alyson Stanfield's new book "I'd Rather Be In The Studio" as she is on the cutting edge of art marketing in my opinion along with Clint Watson.
I have a bunch of other books that cover how to paint flowers, how to paint skys, and so forth and I use these as needed. Sometimes I'll grab a book off the shelve just to get an idea for a new painting. The great thing is that it's like having an art teacher right there next to you. More then one time a painting has come to a halt for a few minutes while I went and looked for an answer in the library, and it always seems to be answered fast. I don't know what I would do without it. Thats it for now, do you have a favorite art book? Leave a comment and let me know, take care and I'll see you again on Wednesday.
