THE END IS NEAR
by PAT QUINN on 5/12/2008 11:40:03 PM

This past Saturday like most since August 2006, I worked on my mural commission. It looks like I have some more details on the "iron sofa" in the front, the lettering, and final revisions to go. I never thought it would have taken this long but I have stuck with it from day one. I have mentioned it here in the blog in the past and more recently my newsletter. I have learned so much and of course improved my techniques. Any of you "I can't even draw a straight line" people out there? Do a project like this for a year and a half of buildings, railings, and windows, and see how straight they get!

If I do one in the future, I will definitely cover the wall with gesso instead of just starting on the flat white latex paint. That proved to be very costly as the first layer of paint just "sucked" right in to the surface instead of spreading out and blending nice. It behaved just like watercolor on watercolor paper. At least on the positive side, there was no problem of adhering to the surface, this painting is on there for good, big time! I found that once I had that first layer down it went along much like a normal painting. I made a good bit of time back every time I painted the areas of the painting that had flowers and foliage as that subject matter is right up my alley. The collector gave me right to paint everything the way "I would" so those areas where refreshing after working on some of the long thin lines that I mentioned earlier. You can see how I stayed faithful to the photo but come up with my way mostly because I found that what is a small shape that looks fine on the photo, doesn't look right "blown up" on a large mural. You as an artist have to fill in the gaps to come up with something that works for the painting. Again I don't have much to go so I will keep you updated as I get it finished so stay tuned in the blog and newsletter. Feel free to drop me a line if you have any questions or comments and I'll see you again on Wednesday, take care!
