LOOKING GOOD
by PAT QUINN on 4/2/2008 8:26:11 PM

Today as I look at my commissioned work in progress I can say one thing for sure, how lucky I am. What do you mean Pat? I'm lucky in the fact that I know exactly what my role is in the "art world" is about. A good many of artists rack their brains over feeling a calling to be an artist and at the same time wondering what makes them different from the great big "mass" of artists out there. I knew from almost day one that my job was to help people out that felt uncomfortable talking to artists and/or talking to people inside a gallery about the artwork they wanted. History is littered with stories of the "flighty artist" or the "starving artist" enough to the point where a person just starting to contemplate beginning an art collection wouldn't know how to go about it.

I have always believed that no matter what the request, the color choices, or the basic concept, that as long as I feel the idea doesn't violate the basic fundamentals of fine art, that the finshed painting has no choice but to be in my style. In other words, as long as my left hand does the work it has to be me. This frees me from any concern over "selling out" or anything of that nature. I love helping people out with affordable ready to hang framed oil paintings either from my own body of work, or a custom commission where you can truly have your own one of a kind painting.

I'll give you an example. I did a commission from a photo of a trail in the center with the woods on both sides. The collector wanted me to paint the very end of the trail dark like the photo but I insisted that I needed to highlght that area lighter to produce that "3D" look. She agreed and loves the work to this day. You just have to know your limits, and what will produce a solid painting that holds up.

I follow auto racing from time to time, but not motorcycle racing. I took this recent commission because the composition of the basic idea was great, and all of the "lines" of the collector's photo flowed wonderfully, so it was and still is a blast to work on.

Thats all for now please feel free to leave your thoughts and I'l see you on Friday, take care.
