A HAPPY MEDIUM
by PAT QUINN on 8/29/2007 5:07:38 AM

Today I thought I would go over and share with you my thoughts on finding a sense of balance in life between work, family, and friends. I know that I'm still struggling with it in mine. For example, as a serious artist we are told to budget "X" amount of hours per day to paint and to block out outside distractions. Thats all well and good and I agree but, what if you live next to a friend going through hard times and they need to use your phone to talk to their sick father because their phone was disconnected for financial reasons? On one hand you feel your calling to "be there for your fellow man" and on the other hand that voice in your head says to be firm as an artist and don't let anyone violate your "sanctuary". I do let him use the phone and his family is very grateful to me for doing so. Another one is family functions on the weekend, they know that your art is important and that you have deadlines from time to time but sometimes you feel like you are putting yourself on your own little island by yourself. A lot of times I myself struggle with planning time to see other art shows, art events and other social situations where I can meet new people. I think that it boils down to taking a regular inventory each week of what worked and what didn't and make the necessary adjustments. What do you think? Take some time to leave me a post about ways you strike a happy medium in your life and I'll see you again on Friday. Have a great day!

Hi Pat,

Juggling life's activities and my art career has been a lifelong struggle for me as well.

Finally, this summer, I have been able to paint every day, but I have had to go away to do it. We have a rustic cabin, and I'm spending my weeks here and painting all day. In the afternoons, I kayak or get some physical activity. I have friends here too, but they know that I am working during the weekdays. On weekends,my husband comes out to join me and I don't paint a that time.

In the winter, I take a month - go to Tucson and paint, and sometimes I join a painting friend in Maine for a week to 10 days to do nothing but paint, walk and eat out.

My real problem is that painting is hard work, and I will often choose easier to accomplish tasks over getting down to business. However, when I'm away, I forget about a lot of what bugs me at home and paint my heart out.

As far as going to shows and stuff, that's more or less a thing of the past (at least at this time). Building an inventory for my gallery shows has to come first, or else I am only pretending to be an artist. When I have a bunch of spectacular paintings to show off, then I can do more networking. I've come to the conclusion that networking when I have no artwork finished is putting the cart before the horse.

Well... that's my 2 cents. It may be helpful or not. Thanks for listening.

You are more than welcome Lori, and thank you for taking the time to write. You gave me a good idea, it's been a long time since I went outside somewhere to paint. I think sometime soon I'll dust off my little cotman field box and go at it. Thanks again Lori and have a great day!
