PRIME TIME
by PAT QUINN on 7/2/2007 5:30:16 AM

Monday morning is upon us once again so it's time for me to go over my plans for the week. Tonight I'm expecting company so all my art related activitys will be done this morning and afternoon. One of the things I'm going to be doing is priming canvases our subject for today. After I have 2 or 3 canvases stretched the next thing that needs done is to prime them with acrylic gesso. This is a white "paint" that seals the canvas up because if you painted in oils directly on the unprimed canvas it would start to rot later down the road. I apply 3 coats lightly sanding inbetween each of them. I like to let each coat dry for a day but you can sometimes put another coat on in about 15 hours. This along with using top quality oil paints are my ways of being confident that my paintings will be around for a good bit of time. See you on Wednesday and as always feel free to let me know what you think.

I've seen paintings which are purportedly oils on paper. However, my old copy of Mayer's Handbook (1971) mentions only 200 lb. watercolor rag papers as suitable for use with oil paints, without treating with gesso, etc. Could you offer some more up-to-date info on painting with oils on paper?

Katherine from what I can find it looks like not much has changed. The only thing different is now it's recommended that you use 300lb paper and lightly brush gesso on both sides of the paper. To make it even more permanent mount it to a stiff cardboard backing. I hope this helps you Katherine, thank you for taking the time to comment and have a great day!
